Students selected for verification of their FAFSA will be notified by the Financial Aid Office through their Mitchell Hamline email address. Students have 4 weeks to complete the verification after a request from the Financial Aid Office.
Failure to complete the verification process will result in a hold on future disbursements of Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Graduate PLUS loans, and Perkins Loans and a return of any federal student loan aid that has already been disbursed. A student working under the work-study program will have 60 days from the request for verification documents before the student’s work-study position will be terminated.
Students are responsible for turning in the following documents:
All students: Verification Worksheet
Tax filers: Tax Transcript, but only for tax-filing students that did not utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool while filing the FAFSA or made changes to the downloaded information from IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for clarification of this requirement.
Non-tax filers: W-2’s or statements of income from self-employment.
Late tax filers: IRS Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Tax Return, W-2’s, or statements of income. Additionally, a copy of your tax transcript is required once taxes have been filed and processed.
Foreign income tax filers: See the Financial Aid Office for clarification on what items are needed.
Upon verification of your FAFSA, if the Financial Aid Office determines any corrections need to be made, they will be processed by the Financial Aid Office through CPS when able. If the Financial Aid Office is unable to make a specific correction, the student will be notified through their Mitchell Hamline email address and the student will then be required to make the correction to their FAFSA within 4 weeks.
If a student’s expected family contribution (EFC) or title IV eligibility changes, the Financial Aid Office will notify the student through their Mitchell Hamline email address.
A student that has been selected for verification and filed a joint federal tax return, but has recently been separated or divorced should contact the Financial Aid Office on documentation needed to complete verification.
