Full-time, off-campus experiences
At Mitchell Hamline, we offer a variety of opportunities for students in their final year of law school to secure full-time, on-site placements working under the supervision of practicing attorneys. It’s a key part of our bridge-to-practice programming, offering experienced students a close-up look at the world of legal work. Students may earn credit for paid work that is otherwise appropriate for Residency credit.
We offer two options for organizing a Residency experience:
Residency Courses
These courses are offered only during spring semester and are available to students in their final three semesters of law school. A student who will graduate in winter may take a Residency Course in the spring semester before they graduate. A student who will graduate in spring may take a Residency Course in their final semester. Students interested in doing a fall or summer residency should consider doing an Independent Residency.
The Legal Residency Program is a collaboration between the law school and the area’s legal practitioners. Its goal is to better train and prepare law students for the practice of law.
Independent Residencies
For students in their final three semesters of law school, including summer term.
Immerse yourself in a specialty of your choice. An Independent Residency is an excellent way for you to earn 10 or more academic credits while working full-time in an area of law that interests you, whether in Minneapolis/St. Paul or another location in the country. Through this program, you can:
- Put your legal knowledge into the context of real practice
- Sharpen lawyering skills you learned in classes, clinics, and externships
- Build relationships in the legal community
