Designed for our most exceptional\u00a0students, this program links you with a faculty mentor\u00a0whose efforts and practical wisdom are changing the law\u00a0itself, and guarantees you a research assistantship, if you choose to take one, with\u00a0your mentor professor or another member of our faculty,\u00a0after your first year of law school. Our professors serve the law as critical observers and\u00a0active participants, and they bring Mitchell Hamline Fellows into the\u00a0core of that work.\u00a0 The program also links you with student and alumni mentors who can give you practical tips about law school and your legal career.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A Mitchell Hamline Fellowship enriches your education<\/h2>\n<p>The Fellows Program\u2014always a resource, never an obligation\u2014enhances your Mitchell Hamline experience in numerous ways. First, we give you mentors for each step of your law school career and beyond.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be matched with a professor-mentor who is doing leading-edge research in an area that corresponds to your particular interests. If you are interested in becoming a faculty research assistant\u2014a fantastic experience and great resume-booster!\u2014for academic credit (or for financial compensation if you\u2019re work-study eligible and prefer pay to credit), your mentoring professor, or another professor, may employ you to assist with his or her scholarly research and writing. You\u2019ll also be matched with a student mentor from among the continuing Fellows, and will have the chance to meet with recent Mitchell Hamline alumni who can give you great advice about law school and the transition from law school to a legal career. Second, you\u2019ll have the opportunity, several times each semester, to hear presentations from faculty on their works-in-progress. Fellows, who are chosen for the program based on their academic and leadership potential, are among the only students invited to these presentations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"accordion-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"accordion-title\">Learn more<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"accordion\">\n<li class=\"accordion-item\">\n<h4 class=\"accordion-item-title\">Who qualifies for the Fellows Program?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordion-item-body\">When you apply to Mitchell Hamline, the Admissions\u00a0Committee reviews your application for the unique\u00a0combination of traits and accomplishments that distinguish\u00a0Fellows. There is no single factor that guarantees that you\u00a0will be invited to participate in this small, highly selective\u00a0program. We look at academic performance, extracurricular\u00a0activities, work history, and whether your background\u00a0indicates a strong potential for abstract reasoning,\u00a0intellectual curiosity, a solid work ethic, and leadership ability. Mitchell Hamline\u2019s professors have a passion for the law, a drive for social change, and the ability to blend scholarly accomplishment with real-world experience.<\/p>\n<p>Listed below are just a few of the faculty members who have\u00a0participated in the Fellows Program and descriptions of their current or recent projects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/biographies\/person\/a-kimberley-dayton\/\">Professor Emerita A. Kimberley Dayton<\/a>\u00a0is a pioneer in the growing elder law field and has helped define how the legal community thinks about aging and the law. Her current research uses a cross-cultural approach to elder law to expose the ugly, inevitable issue of rationing end-of-life health care expenditures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/biographies\/person\/carolyn-grose\/\">Professor Carolyn Grose<\/a> has been expanding the concepts of \u201creflective lawyering\u201d to equip lawyers to better understand and represent clients whose stories may be difficult for others to understand (whether the client is, for example, a transgender teacher or a transnational corporation).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/biographies\/person\/daniel-s-kleinberger\/\">Professor Emeritus Daniel S. Kleinberger<\/a>, former director of the Mitchell Hamline Fellows Program, has been immersed in legislative drafting work for more than two decades,\u00a0with projects ranging from the Minnesota Plain Language Contracts Act to the Uniform Limited Partnership Act. Currently, he is a co-reporter for and principal drafter of the Revised Uniform Limited Liability Company Act.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/biographies\/person\/peter-b-knapp\/\">Professor Peter B. Knapp <\/a>reviews and analyzes the Minnesota Supreme Court\u2019s recent decisions each year, for annual presentation to all state trial and appellate judges, at the request of the Minnesota Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/biographies\/person\/afsheen-john-radsan\/\">Professor Afsheen John Radsan<\/a>, former federal prosecutor and assistant general counsel at the CIA, studies the \u00a0appropriate balance between liberty and security in a world of global terrorism and has hosted public events at Mitchell Hamline with speakers ranging from the former inspector general to the CIA to the author of\u00a0<em>Black Hawk Down<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/biographies\/person\/nancy-ver-steegh\/\">Professor Emerita Nancy Ver Steegh<\/a>\u00a0is using breakthrough research on the nature of domestic violence to change the way courts handle domestic violence cases and enable \u201cwarring\u201d schools of thought to find common ground.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An honor and a select opportunity Affect the law and enhance your career If you want to affect the law as well as understand it,\u00a0and to serve\u00a0as a\u00a0leader in law school,\u00a0the legal community, and the world at large, the Mitchell Hamline Fellows Program can give you\u00a0the necessary edge.
