Rau &#8217;83 Memorial Lecture<\/strong> and an engaging evening of history, constitutional inquiry, and conversation as we reflect on the enduring principles of equality and citizenship in America.\n            <\/p>\n<p>\n                Exactly two-hundred and fifty years ago, America famously proclaimed that \u201call men are created equal.\u201d Over the next few years, a grand American project to abolish slavery took flight in America\u2019s northeast and America\u2019s northwest. This year, Americans have once again debated large issues of creational equality and birth equality\u2014this time in the context of a great debate over the meaning of birthright citizenship. Why did the Supreme Court decide this issue as it did in <em>Trump v. Barbara<\/em>? After graduating from Yale College, <em>summa cum laude<\/em>, in 1980 and from Yale Law School in 1984, and clerking for then Judge (later Justice) Stephen Breyer, Amar joined the Yale faculty in 1985 at the age of 26. He is Yale&#8217;s only living professor to have won the University&#8217;s unofficial triple crown: the Sterling Chair for scholarship, the DeVane Medal for teaching, and the Lamar Award for alumni service.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Amar&#8217;s work has won awards from both the American Bar Association and the Federalist Society, and he has been cited by Supreme Court justices across the spectrum in over fifty cases\u2014tops among living scholars under age 70. He was an informal consultant to the popular TV show, <em>The West Wing<\/em>, and he has appeared on many broadcasts, including <em>The Colbert Report<\/em>, <em>Morning Joe<\/em>, <em>AC360<\/em>, <em>C-SPAN Landmark Cases<\/em>, <em>Constitution USA with Peter Sagal<\/em>, <em>Tucker Carlson Tonight<\/em>, and <em>Fox News<\/em>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        He is the author of more than a hundred law review articles and several books. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basicbooks.com\/titles\/akhil-reed-amar\/the-words-that-made-us\/9780465096367\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Words That Made Us: America&#8217;s Constitutional Conversation, 1760-1840<\/em><\/a>, came out in May 2021 and its sequel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Born-Equal-Remaking-Constitution-1840-1920\/dp\/1541605195\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&#038;dib_tag=AUTHOR&#038;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vI66p6pCvoeqAJ-vEAI--KHs1Gpf9RQbGpqQpSoCpki69JrxTH6Lyxb2N9Le7_V-89GmSR9XDTLaK1HsHwmPYjOTMs8QVBk5zcW94NBJnB3R6UDkAZcLEKQeATpBw-9bi6g1qfzBRGeufjMogHwx3A.KqF9JHQOElRfdQBb3gjLuz06qnjvqv_nJQhBMnKPsx8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Born Equal: Remaking America&#8217;s Constitution, 1840-1920<\/em><\/a> was published in mid-September 2025.
