This month we focused on social etiquette. From hearing colleagues, students, and contacts across the country talk about social etiquette, we learned there are some clear rules (do use your right hand to shake) and some clearly wrong rules (don\u2019t use the wind as an excuse for missing a meeting). We hope this newsletter helps shed even more light on social etiquette rules. We\u2019ll have beverages, appetizers, and good conversation. When do you use them?<\/p>\n<p>Do you send thank you notes? Why? When do you use them?<\/p>\n<table width=\"600\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"100%\">\n<h3><strong>Social Etiquette Tips<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Make sure to have a firm handshake<\/strong> and look the person in the eye when you\u2019re shaking their hand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Develop your brand<\/strong> and stay consistently on brand through you career and interactions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use professional language<\/strong> in all your correspondence, particularly with superiors.\u00a0Be sure to be more formal than the recipient or sender. That is, don\u2019t be the person in the relationship who is more informal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider everything you write<\/strong> in the context of how it would be perceived if it were read in front of a jury.<\/p>\n<p>When you think about social media and professionalism, the <strong>first thing to do is to google yourself<\/strong> (this is what an employer will do).<\/p>\n<ul class=\"default\">\n<li>Do not post anything you wouldn\u2019t want colleagues to see or read<\/li>\n<li>Never friend someone on Facebook who is in a higher position than you<\/li>\n<li>Definitely have a LinkedIn account (you can always come to Career and Professional Development for a review of your account)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Do not order alcohol at events<\/strong> (there wasn\u2019t any qualification here about ordering drinks if someone in a higher position orders one first).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings!
