The new graduates join the ranks of more than 20,000 alumni.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mncourts.gov\/About-The-Courts\/Overview\/JudicialDirectory\/Bio.aspx?id=622\">Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul C. Thissen\u00a0<\/a>delivered the commencement address. Thissen, a former legislator who served as speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, was sworn in to the state\u2019s highest court in 2018. He told the graduates the law degree they worked hard to earn is a powerful thing. \u201cYou\u2019ve been handed a key that grants you admission to places where important decisions are made that affect people\u2019s lives, a place that most people don\u2019t have access to without your help,\u201d Thissen said.<\/p>\n<p>Student speaker\u00a0<strong>Essence Cleveland \u201919<\/strong>, a mother of five and United States Air Force veteran who was part of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/academics\/j-d-enrollment-options\/hybrid-j-d-program\/\">Mitchell Hamline\u2019s Hybrid J.D. program<\/a>, told her fellow graduates she was proud of what they had accomplished.\u00a0 \u201cAll of our hard work has now paid off,\u201d she said. \u201cI stand before you all today humble and proud, of myself and of all of you, for persevering through everything to get to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate Dean for Academic Affairs\u00a0<strong>Peter Knapp<\/strong>, who gave the Charge to the Class, challenged the new graduates to \u201cgo forth and be human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, our success as lawyers, our happiness as lawyers, our virtue as lawyers has less to do with what sets us apart from the rest of the world and more to do with what we share in common with that world.
