These are challenging times in many ways. Whether you are a law student seeking legal work experience, a new graduate navigating a new legal employment market for the first time, or an alum planning a career transition during a turbulent time, the Office of Career and Professional Development is a resource for you. Remember, the following:
- Keep your options and interests open. Explore job opportunities that you may not have previously considered – especially opportunities in areas of the legal profession that are likely to see growth during and flowing from this crisis. This may include traditional legal positions or positions where having your law degree is preferred or an advantage but may not be required. (Learn more about JD Advantage Career opportunities.) Seek work experience that helps you develop skills that are transferable to the work you hope to do.
- Learn about the changing legal market. The legal marketplace is changing rapidly in response to Covid-19. Spend some time reading about or talking to attorneys and other legal professionals to learn more about what practice areas or organizational settings might grow in response to this crisis. Which practice areas or organizational settings may be adversely affected?
- Continue to connect with your professional network even remotely. Don’t be afraid to reach out to attorneys or other legal professionals for networking even during this challenging time. Many attorneys schedules are more flexible in this moment and it may be a good opportunity to connect with them via phone, Zoom, or email.
- Make the most of this (challenging) moment and focus on what you can control. What is your story and how do you communicate it? What steps can you take to communicate how you responded to this challenging time? Update your resume, cover letters, and LinkedIn Profile to communicate.
- Take care of yourself. We are in a global crisis. Be good to yourself. Take time to rest, eat well, and exercise. Connect with family and friends in whatever ways possible. And trust that things will happen as they should.
