Connect with Mitchell Hamline Law Students during COVID-19
In light of the limitations and restrictions on in-person connections due to COVID-19, we invite legal employers and individual practitioners to connect with Mitchell Hamline law students through a variety of virtual opportunities curated for this unique moment.
All employers are invited to participate in these programs. We hope you will take a look at the following ways to engage with our students during this unique and challenging time, and reach out to us with any questions.
Upcoming ways to engage with Mitchell Hamline Students:
-
Casual Career Conversations: Virtual Coffee Chats (30 min.)
Instead of meeting over coffee in-person…
There might be less opportunities for strolls for coffee or skyway treats this summer, but that doesn’t mean students and attorneys can’t stay connected. Not only are these moments great for taking a break from work and refueling, but they are also often a key component in strengthening relationships between students and legal professionals during the summer months. Both students and attorneys often tend to get to know each other better on a personal level when they take the time to step out of the office (literally and figuratively) and refuel together.…Let’s meet over coffee via Zoom, instead!
Practitioners and recruiting staff are invited to join Mitchell Hamline students and recent alumni for virtual coffee chats in a small group format via Zoom. While these are intended to be informal opportunities to have a quick chat with an attorney or member of your recruiting staff, students will be asked to bear in mind that they are still first impressions and should dress and act accordingly (polished and presentable). BYO coffee, tea, or cocoa will be encouraged! What will we talk about?
Students are particularly eager right now to learn what practicing law looks like in the current environment and how they might apply their legal skills in a post-COVID-19 world. They are curious about the changes to the profession and shifts in individuals’ law practices. As always, they are interested in learning more about life at different organizations, types of practitioners and practices, and recommendations pertaining to recruitment during this time. We will send you some talking points in advance and can prompt your conversation with questions, so you can just show up ready to chat. How do I sign up?
Send an email to Debbie Shapiro (debbie.shapiro@mitchellhamline.edu) with your interest. Debbie will provide more information, including logistics and suggested talking points. If you anticipate younger “coworkers” joining you on the call, let us know – students in the same boat might especially appreciate the opportunity to connect with other working parents during this time. -
Meet the Employers Meeting the Moment (60 min.)
This is an opportunity for firms and individual practitioners to share substantive stories with Mitchell Hamline students about how they are “meeting the moment” during the Coronavirus Pandemic. Ideas could include:
- Sharing how your organization is helping a client with an innovative COVID-19 related project or response (with client permission to share, of course). Students will appreciate hearing about real-life applications of legal training and how attorneys are using their skills to support businesses, individuals, and the community during this challenging time.
- Highlighting pro bono work that your organization has taken on or reconfigured in response to COVID-19.
- Describing how your organization has transitioned to remote work and is supporting its employees during this time.
- An individual practitioner or team sharing how they have transitioned their practice to confront legal services needs in a COVID-19 world.
Please email Debbie Shapiro (debbie.shapiro@mitchellhamline.edu) if you are interested in participating in this series.
