As illustrated by Michelle Alexander\u2019s groundbreaking book, <em>The New Jim Crow<\/em>, individuals with criminal records suffer massive collateral consequences including, but sadly not limited to, job loss, homelessness, and family separation. The Reentry Clinic helps those individuals burdened with a criminal record fully reenter society by providing holistic representation to ensure recently released persons have the best opportunity to live a safe and fulfilling life.\u00a0 This work is on the cutting edge of criminal justice and provides insight into the next wave of restorative justice reform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What do students do in the clinic?<\/h2>\n<p>Students provide direct representation to individuals in a whole host of legal matters, including family law, expungement, and civil rights lawsuits. Classroom topics focus on legal issues that individuals with criminal records face upon reentry.\u00a0 There may be some guest lecturers who can address specific reentry issues.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"accordion-item\">\n<h4 class=\"accordion-item-title\">What do students learn in this clinic?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordion-item-body\">Students gain experience in a wide range of client representation and reentry laws.\u00a0 Students will become familiar with interviewing clients, evaluating potential case merits, drafting letters to clients, drafting pleadings, and appearing in court with clients.\u00a0 \u00a0The clinic is a full representation clinic and includes all facets of representation.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"accordion-item\">\n<h4 class=\"accordion-item-title\">When is this clinic offered?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordion-item-body\">Every fall and spring<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"accordion-item\">\n<h4 class=\"accordion-item-title\">How many credits?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordion-item-body\">Students may register for 3-4 credits.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"accordion-item\">\n<h4 class=\"accordion-item-title\">Are students permitted or encouraged to take this clinic for additional semesters?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordion-item-body\">Yes<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"accordion-item\">\n<h4 class=\"accordion-item-title\">Are there any required or recommended pre-requisites?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordion-item-body\">Professional Responsibility<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"accordion-item\">\n<h4 class=\"accordion-item-title\">Can students with full-time jobs take this clinic?<\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordion-item-body\">Yes. The classroom component is offered in the mid- afternoon, to accommodate students with full-time work schedules.
