{"id":420,"date":"2018-03-26T16:06:41","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T21:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/giving\/?p=420"},"modified":"2018-03-26T16:06:41","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T21:06:41","slug":"donors-meet-students-who-benefit-from-their-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/giving\/2018\/03\/26\/donors-meet-students-who-benefit-from-their-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"Donors meet students who benefit from their scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mitchell Hamline students received $800,000 in scholarships last year, support that helped them continue working toward the goal of earning a J.D.<\/p>\n<p>Donors who created and continue to fund those scholarships got a chance to meet with the students who benefit from that assistance during the annual Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, March 22, at Mitchell Hamline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President and Dean Mark C. Gordon<\/strong> told donors their support makes it possible for students to pursue rewarding careers. Gordon also reminded donors that giving to the school\u2019s scholarships helps Mitchell Hamline recruit promising students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you from all of us from the bottom of our hearts for everything you\u2019re doing to enable our students\u2019 dreams to come true,\u201d Gordon said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13534 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/2-ben-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>That\u2019s something<strong> Ben Omorogbe \u201995<\/strong> understands well. As an immigrant from Nigeria, one of the world\u2019s poorest countries, he relied on scholarship support to fulfill his dream of attending law school and becoming a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA dream that became a reality only because of the kindness of so many people\u2014many of them I never knew or met,\u201d Omorogbe said.<\/p>\n<p>Omorogbe, who earned his degree from Mitchell Hamline predecessor William Mitchell, is vice president and associate group general counsel at The Travelers Insurance Companies. His extensive involvement with the school started as a student, when he served as both vice chair and chair of the Student Bar Association. After graduation, he served on the alumni board and the board of trustees. He\u2019s also been a student mentor, a fundraising volunteer, and a host for numerous alumni and admitted student events. He currently acts in an advisory role to the school.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Omorogbe created the Leadership Scholarship, a fund that he said \u201crecognizes students who are doing well academically, and who are also involved in leadership positions in student organizations or in their community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13530 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/1jose-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Omorogbe hopes the students who benefit from his scholarship will someday create scholarships of their own to assist students who follow in their footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>To second-year student <strong>Jose Gallardo<\/strong>, scholarship support means more than just financial help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes me realize someone believes in me, and someone is helping me along the way, and I am not alone,\u201d Gallardo said.<\/p>\n<p>Gallardo is head of Mitchell Hamline\u2019s Latino\/a Law Student Association, teaches Street Law through the Minnesota Justice Foundation, and works as a law clerk in the adult felony criminal prosecution unit of the Ramsey County Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration law is Gallardo\u2019s passion. He was determined to go to law school after his brother was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in 2014. His brother could be deported to Mexico in 2020, a fate Gallardo fears hangs over his father\u2019s head as well. During this year\u2019s J-term, he participated in a pro-bono immigration clinic at a detention facility in Texas offering legal advice to mothers and their children seeking asylum.<\/p>\n<p>This summer, Gallardo is headed to Chile, where he\u2019ll study international law, something he told Mitchell Hamline\u2019s scholarship supporters he wouldn\u2019t have been able to do without their help.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mitchell Hamline students received $800,000 in scholarships last year, support that helped them continue working toward the goal of earning a J.D.
