The certificate will give those who work in the elder care industry \u2014and practicing attorneys\u2014the skills to navigate the complex legal and policy issues that surround the aging population.<\/p>\n<p>As the number of older Americans increases, there\u2019s a growing likelihood that a greater variety of professionals will need to respond to elder abuse, whether physical, emotional, or financial in nature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14863 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/03\/elder-law-feature-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really think it\u2019s a great course for social workers, health care providers, financial workers, lawyers, state agency workers, and those who work in law enforcement. They\u2019re all encountering something that has to do with elder law,\u201d said course instructor\u00a0<strong>Suzy Scheller \u201908<\/strong>, a Twin Cities attorney whose firm,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/schellerlegalsolutions.com\/\">Scheller Legal Solutions<\/a>, handles a wide range of elder abuse cases.<\/p>\n<p>Scheller will teach the course with Iris Freeman, the founding chair of the Minnesota Elder Justice Center.<\/p>\n<p>The classes, which start April 3, will be flexible and delivered through Mitchell Hamline\u2019s online learning management system. Participants will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with each other, and faculty, in discussions and hands-on exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Students will take four online courses during the 12-week program:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"default\">\n<li>Overview of Aging and Elder Law<\/li>\n<li>Government Benefits and Long-Term Care Regulation<\/li>\n<li>Assisted Decision Making and End-of-Life Considerations<\/li>\n<li>Harm and Remedies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Approval for 16 CLE credits is pending. Social work continuing education credits are available.<\/p>\n<p>Registration and program information can be found at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/elder-law-chronic-care\/\">mitchellhamline.edu\/elder-law-chronic-care\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Professional Legal Education at Mitchell Hamline started in 2016 as a way to provide online certificate programs for professionals seeking legal training outside the boundaries of a traditional J.D. Elder Law and Chronic Care is the fourth PLE certificate program. The others are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/cybersecurity\/\">Cybersecurity and Privacy Law<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/hr-compliance\/\">Human Resources Compliance<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/law-leadership-healthcare-administration\/\">Law and Leadership in Healthcare Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"introduction-wrapper\">\n<ul class=\"default\">\n<li>The Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Department of Human Services receive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/news\/pressrel\/2018\/ohfc080818.html\">400 reports of abuse, neglect or financial exploitation<\/a>\u00a0of elderly or vulnerable Minnesotans every week.<\/li>\n<li>The National Council on Aging reports that\u00a01 in 10 Americans over the age of 60\u00a0has experienced some form of elder abuse.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.truelinkfinancial.com\/true-link-report-on-elder-financial-abuse-012815\">2015 report by True Link Financial<\/a>\u00a0found that financial exploitation costs older Americans $36.4 billion a year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mitchell Hamline is now offering\u00a0a certificate in Elder Law and Chronic Care\u00a0as part of its\u00a0Professional Legal Education programs.
