{"id":13371,"date":"2018-02-14T11:52:26","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T17:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/?p=13371"},"modified":"2018-02-16T10:29:02","modified_gmt":"2018-02-16T16:29:02","slug":"professor-jonathan-kahn-takes-on-implicit-bias-in-new-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/2018\/02\/14\/professor-jonathan-kahn-takes-on-implicit-bias-in-new-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Jonathan Kahn takes on implicit bias in new book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13372\" src=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/kahn-with-book-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/kahn-with-book-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/kahn-with-book-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/kahn-with-book-2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>In his new book, Prof. Jonathan Kahn takes issue with implicit bias.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s right there in the title: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/race-on-the-brain\/9780231184243\">Race on the Brain: What Implicit Bias Gets Wrong About the Struggle for Racial Justice<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that Kahn doesn\u2019t believe in implicit bias\u2014the idea that we all carry certain prejudices against groups of people or other cultures in our subconscious, even if we know it\u2019s wrong \u2014 rather he believes we use the concept too much in explaining race relations in America today.\u00a0 He maintains that as a master narrative implicit bias allows us to \u201cget off the hook too easily\u201d when it comes to\u00a0dealing with racism in society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes racial injustice into primarily a function of individual mindsets and intent,\u201d Kahn says. \u201cIt makes the past irrelevant, it ignores structural factors, and it focuses on the intent of the\u00a0perpetrator rather than on the impact of the person who is actually experiencing the harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his book, published by Columbia University Press of New York, Kahn maintains that implicit bias could negatively affect efforts to end racial injustice. If people turn to experts to diagnose and provide technical fixes for implicit bias, they might be less likely to work democratically to fix societal problems that have led to racism.<\/p>\n<p>Kahn\u2019s book calls for society to step back and rethink what the nature of racism is and how best to take on the difficult job of finding solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legacy of racism is still very much with us,\u201d Kahn says. \u201cIt\u2019s not just in the past.
