{"id":13654,"date":"2018-04-12T16:20:18","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T21:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/?p=13654"},"modified":"2018-04-12T16:20:18","modified_gmt":"2018-04-12T21:20:18","slug":"two-alums-honored-with-mitchell-hamline-law-review-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/2018\/04\/12\/two-alums-honored-with-mitchell-hamline-law-review-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Two alums honored with Mitchell Hamline Law Review awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mitchell Hamline Law Review has honored two alums for their work on the student-edited legal journal during their time in law school and their successful careers since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Judge Leo Brisbois \u201987<\/strong> and <strong>Kathy Kimmel &#8217;96<\/strong>\u00a0each received a 2018 Wallace-Lerner Award for Excellence in Leadership during the law review\u2019s annual banquet on Friday, April 6.<\/p>\n<p>The Mitchell Hamline Law Review publishes timely articles of regional, national, and international interest for legal practitioners, scholars, and lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>The Wallace-Lerner Award is a combination of two awards that were handed out by Mitchell Hamline\u2019s predecessor schools. The <strong>Marcy Wallace<\/strong>\u00a0Award was named after the first editor-in-chief of the William Mitchell Law Review, who graduated in 1974. The <strong>Gwen Lerner <\/strong>Award was named after the first editor-in-chief of the Hamline Law Review, a 1978 grad.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Brisbois was associate editor of the Hamline Law Review during his time in law school. After graduating in 1987, Brisbois served as assistant staff judge advocate in the U.S. Army in Germany. He returned to Minnesota in 1991 and worked in private practice for nearly two decades. In 2010, Brisbois became the first Native American to be appointed as a magistrate judge in Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Kimmel served as editor of the William Mitchell Law Review while attending law school. Kimmel graduated in 1996 and has continued to serve the school in a variety of ways since. She spent two years on the board of trustees and six years on the alumni board. Kimmel, a partner in the litigation department of the firm Fox Rothschild in Minneapolis, also contributes to the community through pro-bono work. She\u2019s been involved with the <a href=\"https:\/\/tubman.org\/\">Tubman Safety Project<\/a>\u00a0for 14 years, providing free legal help to low-income victims of domestic
