{"id":13881,"date":"2018-07-05T14:45:22","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T19:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/?p=13881"},"modified":"2018-07-05T14:45:22","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T19:45:22","slug":"project-assisted-by-dispute-resolution-institute-honored-by-league-of-minnesota-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/2018\/07\/05\/project-assisted-by-dispute-resolution-institute-honored-by-league-of-minnesota-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Project assisted by Dispute Resolution Institute honored by League of Minnesota Cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A series of community conversations put on with help from Mitchell Hamline&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/dispute-resolution-institute\/courses\/summer-institute\/\">Dispute Resolution Institute<\/a>\u00a0(DRI) has been honored by a statewide local government organization.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lmc.org\/page\/1\/COEwinners18-nr.jsp?ssl=true\">The League of Minnesota Cities <\/a>honored Falcon Heights with a 2018 City of Excellence Award for its Policing and Inclusion Community Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>The effort was in response to the shooting of Philando Castile by a police officer in Falcon Heights on July 6, 2016. Seeing a need for healing in the wake of the shooting, Falcon Heights developed a task force assigned to hold five community conversations around policing and police-community relations.<\/p>\n<p>Mediation experts from DRI, along with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mn.gov\/bms\/ocdr\/\">Bureau of Mediation Services Office for Collaboration and Dispute Resolution <\/a>and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hhh.umn.edu\/\">Humphrey School of Public Affairs<\/a>, helped coordinate and guide the community conversations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was grateful to assist with this important community engagement process and pleased to see the city of Falcon Heights recognized for its efforts,\u201d said DRI Director\u00a0<strong>Sharon Press<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>180 residents attended the meetings, and input from the conversations was included in the final recommendations on inclusion and policing that were ultimately adopted by the Falcon Heights City Council.<\/p>\n<p>DRI\u2019s work with Falcon Heights was one of two recent projects supported by a $45,000 grant from the American Arbitration Association and the International Dispute Resolution Institute.
