{"id":15550,"date":"2019-08-21T16:07:43","date_gmt":"2019-08-21T21:07:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/?p=15550"},"modified":"2019-12-12T17:18:46","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T23:18:46","slug":"re-entry-clinic-to-expand-with-help-of-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/2019\/08\/21\/re-entry-clinic-to-expand-with-help-of-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Reentry Clinic to expand with help of grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A $145,000 grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spmcf.org\/criminal-justice-grants\">Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundations<\/a> will help expand the work of Mitchell Hamline&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/clinics\/re-entry-clinic\/\">Reentry Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The clinic helps people transition from prison back into society by offering legal representation and connections to other resources and services such as community education.<\/p>\n<p>The clinic also gives Mitchell Hamline students real-world legal experience. Under the supervision of faculty and experienced attorneys, students assist the clinic&#8217;s clients with a host of legal matters, including family law, criminal record expungement, and civil rights lawsuits. Students interview clients, draft pleadings, and appear in court with their clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 8,000 people are released from prison in Minnesota every year, and thousands more are released from local facilities,\u201d said <strong>Peter Knapp<\/strong>, Mitchell Hamline\u2019s interim president and dean. \u201cBut being out of lockup doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re not locked out. Formerly incarcerated individuals face great barriers, many of them legal. This grant will enable us to expand the clinic\u2019s representation and support as our clients navigate legal and other challenges that people face as they return home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundations also awarded a nearly $40,000 grant to fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5IYF3tENOeU&amp;feature=youtu.be\">SEEN<\/a>, a project to collect portraits, audio, written works, and video of people in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Eric J. Jolly, president and CEO of the Saint Paul and Minnesota Foundations, said both projects are aligned with the foundation&#8217;s key strategies: advocating for equity and investing in community-led solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mitchell Hamline Law School Reentry Clinic and the SEEN project are both working to make reentry less difficult and more equitable, and to humanize justice-impacted people, by tackling barriers and sharing narratives about what it means to be incarcerated.
