A vigil to honor the life of George Floyd drew about 200 people to campus Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

Members of the Mitchell Hamline community as well as the public at large gathered on the front lawn to mark the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s murder at the hands of police. The event began at 8 pm, the approximate time on May 25, 2020, that Floyd’s interaction with police began. Attendees held electric candles or used the flashlights on their phones during a 9 minute and 29 second time of silence, led by Rev. Melvin Miller of Progressive Baptist Church.<\/p>\n

Also participating in the ceremony\u2014which was organized by the school’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Community and Events Committee\u2014were several members of Mitchell Hamline’s faculty and staff including Rick Petry, Sharon Van Leer, Dean Anthony Niedwiecki, Professor Angelique EagleWoman, Husniyah Dent Bradley, and Deanna Burns.<\/p>\n
