As such, he\u2019s packing the curriculum into just six classes.<\/p>\n<p>For Lehmann, managing partner of Lehmann Law Office, the world of museum law is an ever-increasing part of the work he does as an attorney. \u201cIn addition to more typical business, tax, and nonprofit law they must follow, most museums are collecting institutions,\u201d he said. \u201cThat opens all sorts of legal and ethical issues involving the management of their collections, including intellectual property and cultural heritage laws and ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19020\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19020\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19020\" src=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/01\/Walter-Lehmann-300x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/01\/Walter-Lehmann-300x281.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/01\/Walter-Lehmann.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adjunct professor Walter Lehmann &#8217;92 is managing partner of Lehmann Law Office.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Museums have been in the news more of late as conversations continue over whether some should even possess the collections they have. The University of Minnesota, for example, is <a href=\"https:\/\/mndaily.com\/274753\/news\/umn-begins-repatriation-of-mimbres-cultural-collections-after-32-years-of-non-compliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the process<\/a> of returning the remains of Native Americans that members of the anthropology department had excavated nearly a century ago. In September, the Manhattan district attorney\u2019s office in New York <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/02\/arts\/design\/met-museum-looting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seized 27 antiquities<\/a> from the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art, saying they\u2019d been looted.<\/p>\n<p>Matters like these require deliberations among people with a knowledge of museum law, noted Lehmann.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do sense this is an era where attorneys with knowledge of museum law will always be busy,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I have also come to realize over the years that even for students who will not be working with museums, the course provides a good review of legal concepts covered in first- and second-year law school courses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat also makes it a good way to start preparing for the bar exam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further reading<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/13\/arts\/museums-looted-art-repatriation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">For U.S. museums with looted art, the Indiana Jones era is over<\/a> (New York Times)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For all the imagination a trip through a museum can inspire, it might be hard for people to remember that museums are businesses \u2013 usually nonprofit \u2013 that must comply with the same business and nonprofit laws that exist for everyone else.
