{"id":1197,"date":"2019-01-02T10:28:10","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/sex-offense-litigation-policy\/?p=1197"},"modified":"2019-01-02T10:28:10","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T16:28:10","slug":"why-should-feminists-be-against-the-sex-offender-registry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/sex-offense-litigation-policy\/2019\/01\/02\/why-should-feminists-be-against-the-sex-offender-registry\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Should Feminists Be Against the Sex Offender Registry?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"introduction-wrapper\">\n<p>By Reina Gattuso<\/p>\n<p>In October, the Supreme Court heard a case that was painfully ironic, considering the Kavanaugh hearings the nation had just been subjected to: a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/409480-sex-offender-registry-sparks-supreme-court-debate-over-congressional\">challenge<\/a> to the United States\u2019 extremely restrictive sex offender registry laws. <span id=\"more-132174\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2018\/10\/neil-gorsuch-sex-offender-registry-supreme-court.html\">opinions on the case<\/a>\u00a0Gundy v. United States, which\u00a0challenges the Attorney General\u2019s ability to retroactively impose registry requirements, have yet to come out, debate around sex offender registries is particularly important in the wake of #metoo.<\/p>\n<p>Established in the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smart.gov\/legislation.htm\">90s<\/a>\u00a0following several high-profile rapes and murders of children, the sex offender registry used parental grief to propagate \u201ctough on crime\u201d policies. Registries were initially framed as mechanisms to <a href=\"https:\/\/psmag.com\/news\/liberals-and-conservatives-act-differently-about-sexual-predators\">protect children<\/a> from sexual abuse by\u00a0imposing severe and often lifelong housing, work, and even internet restrictions on people found guilty of sexual violence. The\u00a0public\u00a0nature of the registry was intended to\u00a0help\u00a0parents protect their children against \u201csexual predators\u201d in their communities.
