{"id":1553,"date":"2019-06-29T09:14:04","date_gmt":"2019-06-29T14:14:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/sex-offense-litigation-policy\/?p=1553"},"modified":"2019-07-03T12:53:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-03T17:53:13","slug":"reuters-conservative-u-s-justice-gorsuch-again-sides-with-liberals-in-criminal-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/sex-offense-litigation-policy\/2019\/06\/29\/reuters-conservative-u-s-justice-gorsuch-again-sides-with-liberals-in-criminal-case\/","title":{"rendered":"[Reuters] Conservative U.S. Justice Gorsuch again sides with liberals in criminal case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"introduction-wrapper\">\n<p>By Lawrence Hurley | June 26th, 2019<\/p>\n<p>For the second time in three days, conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch on Wednesday sided with his four liberal colleagues in a 5-4 ruling in favor of a criminal defendant, on this occasion an Oklahoma man convicted of possessing child pornography.<\/p>\n<p>The court ruled that the right of Andre Haymond to face a jury trial under the U.S. Constitution\u2019s Sixth Amendment was violated when a judge unilaterally imposed an additional prison sentence after Haymond violated the terms of his supervised release.<\/p>\n<p>Haymond originally was sentenced to just over three years in prison and 10 years of supervised release after being convicted by a jury in 2010 of possessing pornographic images involving children.
