Will Minnesota rise to the occasion? How do we fix systemic racism in policing? After an informative first panel that laid critical groundwork for our series on race and police reform, we are excited to announce our second panel discussion, which we will hold on August 25, 2020, at 2:00 pm CDT.

With the help of Commissioner of Corrections, Paul Schnell; Criminology and Criminal Justice Professor, Jillian Peterson; Executive Director of the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage, Justin Terrell; and retired Carver County Sheriff, Jim Olson, in our second panel we will explore potential avenues for reforming policing culture and improving policing outcomes in Minnesota. Our discussion will focus on policing policies and practices from recruitment and training to supervision, discipline, and termination. Residency requirements, diversity initiatives, training, civilian oversight—do any of these steps promise meaningful change? The “code of silence,” police unions, arbitrators—what does a healthy police culture look like and how do we get there from here?

A reminder that we will continue the series in the coming months with panels focused on Judicial Responses to Racism in Policing and Alternatives to Policing. If you have specific topics you would like to see addressed, or if you know someone who you believe would be a good fit for one of our panels, please let us know.

We hope to see you (virtually) as our series continues on August 25.
