{"id":42304,"date":"2021-02-22T10:26:25","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T16:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/students\/?p=42304"},"modified":"2021-02-22T10:26:25","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T16:26:25","slug":"2021-mwl-equal-justice-award-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/students\/2021\/02\/22\/2021-mwl-equal-justice-award-2\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 MWL EQUAL JUSTICE AWARD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2021 MWL EQUAL JUSTICE AWARD<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"1175\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"1175\">All Minnesota law students are invited to submit papers or articles they have written on a topic involving<\/p>\n<p>law and social justice.\u00a0 The writer(s) of the selected article or essay will be awarded a cash prize of<\/p>\n<p>$1,000.00 (total) at MWL\u2019s 49th Annual Meeting to be held remotely on Friday, April 30th, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All topics related broadly to law, liberty, justice, and equality are eligible, whether or not related to<\/p>\n<p>women&#8217;s rights or feminist theory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY<\/strong>:<br \/>\nA paper is eligible for the 2021 MWL Equal Justice Award if it was completed by the student while<\/p>\n<p>attending law school.\u00a0 Papers written by individuals or\u00a0with student\u00a0co-authors are accepted.\u00a0 Papers<\/p>\n<p>completed by members of the class of 2020 while attending law school are also eligible if they<\/p>\n<p>were completed\u00a0<u>after<\/u>\u00a0the deadline for submitting for the 2020 Equal Justice Award (February 28, 2020).<\/p>\n<p>A paper may only be considered once for the Equal Justice Award.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>All submissions must be received at MWL by Monday, March 1st, 2021 at 4:30 p.m.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Nominations<\/p>\n<p>should submitted electronically via email to the attention of MWL Executive Director<\/p>\n<p>Debra Pexa (<a href=\"mailto:dpexa@mwlawyers.org\">dpexa@mwlawyers.org<\/a>).\u00a0 Prior to the deadline, feel free to contact Debra with questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nCRITERIA<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p>1. Significance: Does the work address an important legal and social issue of justice and equality?<\/p>\n<p>2. Originality: Does the work make an original contribution to the topic? For example, does it<\/p>\n<p>reinterpret an issue, offer new solutions to a problem, or suggest new connections between areas of<\/p>\n<p>analysis? Does it draw on materials that shed new light on a topic? Does it offer a new perspective,<\/p>\n<p>solution, or approach to an issue?<\/p>\n<p>3. Presentation: Is the scholarship factually accurate? Is the paper well written? Does the author<\/p>\n<p>address the issue using appropriate methodology, well designed to serve the author\u2019s purpose?<\/p>\n<p>Does the paper display appropriate depth of research? Does the paper place its analysis appropriately<\/p>\n<p>in the scholarly field?<\/p>\n<p>4. Persuasiveness: Does the paper present a cogent defense of the position taken? Does it give<\/p>\n<p>appropriate attention to competing views? Does the author\u2019s argument persuade the reader?<\/p>\n<p>5. Impact: Does the work present ideas that are applicable in practical contexts? Are the ideas<\/p>\n<p>useful to the educated reader?<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nSUBMISSIONS<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Submissions should include:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A cover letter\u2014separate from the paper or article being submitted\u2014with the writer\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>name, address, phone number, school of attendance,\u00a0month and year of law school graduation<\/p>\n<p>(actual or anticipated) and date (month and year) when paper was completed.<\/p>\n<p>2. In an accompanying, separate document, the paper or article submitted for the competition.<\/p>\n<p>This document must NOT include the student\u2019s name, school, or other identifying information.<\/p>\n<p>Any identifying information MUST be deleted from the article\u2019s title, cover page, header,<\/p>\n<p>footers, and footnotes before submitting the paper or article.<\/p>\n<p>3.
