Creighton is monitoring evolving conditions for travel and cautiously anticipates there will be greater opportunity as the number of COVID-19 cases decline and the vaccination rate increases nationally within the U.S. Classes will be held in L.A.’s Holocaust Museum (just south of Hollywood) and possibly one of the L.A. area Law Schools from July 3-30, 2021.

Classes: While the venue this summer is changing, the program content remains much the same. The International Criminal Law course will be led by Professors Michael Kelly and Rajika Shah, the Legacy of the Holocaust & the Law course will still be led by Dr. Michael Bryant, both of which will continue to be supported by Professor Michael Bazyler with guest lectures by German law professor Dr. Christoph Safferling, Judge Charles Smith (Kosovo Tribunal – The Hague), and other visiting faculty.

Concentration Camps: In addition to a “virtual tour” of Auschwitz Concentration Camp that Professor Edyta Gawron will lead from Poland, students will also journey from L.A. with their professors up through the Mojave Desert into the Sierra Nevada Mountains for a 3-day excursion that will focus on visiting the Manzanar Japanese-American Internment Camp from World War II – located in the canyon between Sequoia National Park and Death Valley. Preparation for this immersion begins with understanding the Korematsu case, traveling the same path internees did 75 years ago, and then speaking with former internees at the Manzanar site. The class will also visit Native American elders at Big Pine Reservation.

Tokyo War Crimes Trial: Our post-World War II international law focus shifts from West to East for this summer, and more coverage will center on establishing the tribunal to prosecute the Japanese Imperial officers by U.S.-led teams. We will follow the legal journey of Creighton Law School graduate Tom Delaney (class of 1930), who was detailed to join the team that prosecuted former Prime Minister Tojo in 1946-47. Delaney’s original trial papers are part of our Law Library’s rare books collection and digitized online. We are quite proud of his participation in the creation of this field of law.

The Role of Propaganda in Atrocities & Depiction of International Criminal Law in Action: We will take advantage of our temporary home in Los Angeles to hear from leading figures in the film industry about the role of propaganda in the commission of atrocities with special lectures at the University of Southern California’s Film School. We also explore the depiction of international criminal law in action with a screening of Nuremberg (Alec Baldwin portraying Justice Robert Jackson) and discussion with some actors from that film, as well as with a dramatic reading of the book/play The Trial of Prisoner 043 (imagining prosecution of an American president for war crimes) by producer/director Terry Jastrow and his wife, actress Anne Archer.

Holocaust Education: Our commitment to meaningful Holocaust education remains strong. In addition to visiting Auschwitz remotely and receiving lectures by Professor Bazyler and others while visiting USC’s Shoah Foundation, the Museum of Tolerance, the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum, and speak with some of those in Hollywood who worked on the movie Schindler’s List about not only portraying a story set in the Holocaust, but conveying the reality of it in order to demonstrate the same “purpose” that animates attorneys such as you to be vigilant against repression and fight for human rights. Our co-sponsor, Omaha’s Institute for Holocaust Education (IHE), will also join us in L.A. for some programming.

Application: May 15 is our seat deposit deadline for this revised N2H program, ($250) and that can be accomplished by (1) registering for the program here, and then with your NetID, logging on and uploading your deposit here. Please register ASAP to secure your seat. Our first zoom info session, link below, will be April 20 at Noon PST (2pm CST) and will cover classes, faculty, logistics questions, documents required by our GEO office, financial aid, etc.

Join us for the re-engineered 2021 summer program: From Nuremberg to The Hague via L.A.!

Zoom Link: Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://creighton.zoom.us/j/93784899116
Or iPhone one-tap: US: +13462487799,,93784899116# or +16699006833,,93784899116#

For more information:

Please contact Professor Michael Kelly at Creighton University (402-280-3455); mkelly@creighton.edu

CREIGHTON’S NUREMBERG SUMMER PROGRAM RE-LOCATES TO LOS ANGELES Relocation: Due to uncertain COVID conditions in Germany and The Netherlands, Creighton University is holding its “Nuremberg to The Hague” Program in Los Angeles for summer 2021 in cooperation with our partner Chapman University School of Law.
