We are excited to announce that Mitchell Hamline will once again be fielding a team at the McGee Moot Court Competition, organized by Mitchell Hamline School of Law and University of Minnesota Law School. This year\u2019s competition will be held virtually on March 3 \u2013 5. 2022<\/u>.<\/p>\n
William McGee, Esq. whom the tournament is named after, was born and raised in St. Paul. He attended high school and was a star athlete at St. Paul Academy. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Latin, and later graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School. After law school, Mr. McGee served the public as a prosecutor for five years, then spent the rest of his career as a public defender, providing high quality legal representation to low-income citizens. Indeed, Mr. McGee was the first African American to become the chief public defender for Hennepin County, the State\u2019s largest county.<\/p>\n
Click here for more information regarding the competition. <\/em><\/a>https:\/\/mitchellhamline.edu\/competitions\/competitions-and-moot-courts\/william-e-mcgee-national-civil-rights-moot-court-competition\/<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Students chosen for the Mitchell Hamline team will write a brief and have multiple opportunities to make oral arguments during the competition. The brief is written by the students on the team without faculty or other assistance. The final brief is due no later than January 27, 2022<\/u>. After the brief is submitted, students will then develop oral arguments with the assistance of faculty and practitioners\u2019 coaching ahead of the preliminary oral arguments on<\/u> March 2, 2022<\/u>. Team members should plan to invest time and energy each week into working on the brief and then preparing for oral arguments. The team is coached by Adjunct Professor Rick Petry. Students must have completed their first year to be considered.
