YMCA NATIONAL JUDICIAL COMPETITION (NJC)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Opportunities for Legal-Connected Adults <\/strong><\/p>\n

August 1-4, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>National Judicial Competition (NJC) is a YMCA-sponsored competition consisting of a model U.S. Supreme Court and a national-level Mock Trial. High School students from any state who have previously participated in Youth in Government programs or from Minnesota who have participated in Mock Trial choose one track or the other and prepare all aspects of the case. NJC participants expand on the legal processes they learned in their state programs and build their skills at an even higher level.<\/p>\n

The NJC Committee is seeking up to 130 adult volunteers with legal experience, including:<\/p>\n

Attorneys<\/p>\n

Law students<\/p>\n

Paralegal and other law-related professionals<\/p>\n

The PRIMARY ROLE<\/strong> for volunteers (up to 114) is to evaluate student participants in Mock Trials and Appellate Court proceedings. All evaluators will give scores and written feedback to students \u2013 for youth attorneys and for youth judges.<\/p>\n

Evaluators will receive overview training via Zoom before the competition.<\/p>\n

Just prior to their volunteer shift, evaluators will receive a brief orientation as well as a score sheet and rubric to assist in applying standards to their evaluation.<\/p>\n

A SECOND ROLE<\/strong> for volunteers (up to 16) is to help coach and support student participants from any of the participating states. Opportunities are available leading up to, as well as during, the competition.<\/p>\n

Volunteers may commit to single slots or to multiple slots over the course of a day or over the entire conference.\u00a0All NJC trials will take place at the Minnesota State Capitol Complex.<\/p>\n

Monday, August 1, 2022 <\/strong><\/p>\n

8 \u2013 9:30 PM (up to 12 volunteers to coach, can come earlier for dinner)<\/p>\n

Tuesday, August 2, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

8:30 \u2013 11:30 AM (up to 28 volunteers to evaluate), 12:30 \u2013 3:30 PM (up to 28 volunteers to evaluate)<\/p>\n

Wednesday, August 3, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

8:30 \u2013 11:30 AM (up to 28 volunteers to evaluate), 12:30 \u2013 3:30 PM (up to 28 volunteers to evaluate)<\/p>\n

Thursday, August 4, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

8:30 AM \u2013 11:30 AM (up to 6 volunteers to evaluate the Trial and Appellate Showcase)<\/p>\n
