Judge Ann Alton has been a Minnesota Hennepin County District Judge since 1989. During that time she has overseen thousands of civil and criminal proceedings and for three years was the presiding judge over the Mental Health Probate Division which handles commitment issues for cases involving the mentally ill and sexually dangerous.
Prior to joining the bench, Alton was an Assistant Hennepin County Attorney for 19 years where she prosecuted felonies including white collar crimes and sexual offenses. There, she established a sexual services program and worked with the state legislature to draft policies to address how domestic abuse, child abuse, and sexual abuse cases are handled in the judicial system, as well as policies to establish shelters.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, she has been an adjunct professor at Mitchell Hamline since 1977.
Judge Alton teaches in the Advocacy program and Practicum.
