Neven Selimovic, MHSL rising 3L, is spending his summer externing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in Washington, DC. Neven sent us this description of his summer experience, “the DC experience is everything I hoped for and more. My supervisor has had many externs and he has a great style of teaching us while letting us apply the knowledge we learn. There is also a great mix of undergrad and graduate students, so the networking opportunities are huge for me.
We have weekly meetings with new examiners about how to interpret the relevant statutes and recent cases. We are given applications to write office actions for, extensive training on all of their software, and we can sit in on a lot of meetings and be a fly on the wall. The PTO does a great job at allowing us to be flexible so we can attend CAFC hearings and tour DC.
Overall, I’m very happy with the program and feel very well equipped to tackle the patent clinic at MHSL.”
