Health Disparities Among Under-Resourced Communities

The JPPP Symposium brings together experts in health justice, medical practice, and indigenous health care. The Symposium’s goals are to examine the long-standing health care disparities and inequities that continue to face indigenous communities. The program will explore sources of systemic inequities, economic disadvantages, and environmental exposures that prevent individuals and their communities from achieving optimal health, leading to differences in health outcomes. The program closes with “poetic remarks” by Hakim Bellamy, a noted poet, author, and national and regional Poetry Slam Champion.

This is an important conversation about health disparities and the systemic social and economic inequities that affect marginalized populations, particularly Native American communities. We hope to identify not only health challenges but also potential solutions for this important policy issue.

 Speakers:

Aila Hoss, J.D., Associate Professor, Indiana University McKenney School of Law, Bloomington, IN. “Enforcing Indigenous Health Justice”

Vivian Johnson, Pharm.D., Senior Vice President of Community Health Services, Parkland Health, Dallas, TX. “Addressing Community Health Needs: The Role of Safety Net Hospitals in Promoting Health Equity”

Gwynneth Wildcatt, Director of Accessibility, Resources, and Member Services, Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority, Cherokee, NC, & Third-Year Law Student, Mitchell Hamline School of Law. “How the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is Addressing Health Disparities”

Chenoa Bah Stilwell-Jenson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Family & Community Medicine, School of Medicine, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM. “Health and Cultural Communication”

Heather Tanana, J.D., Visiting Assistant Professor, University of California-Irvine School of Law, Irvine, CA. “Indigenous Health Justice: Confronting Systemic Inequities in Maternal Care and Water Access”

Hakim Bellamy, Poet, Author, and Inaugural Poet Laureate for the City of Albuquerque; Third-Year Law Student, University of New Mexico Law School, Albuquerque, NM. “Health Justice”
