David Lillehaug, former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota, has left a lasting legacy on the State of Minnesota and the nation. To honor his countless contributions to our legal community, the American Constitution Society (ACS), along with many local and national luminaries, is hosting a virtual tribute to this longtime leader and public servant.
In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Justice Lillehaug as the United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota upon the recommendation of the late Senator Paul Wellstone. As part of his recommendation for Minnesota’s chief prosecutor, Senator Wellstone stated the following: “I have met maybe five people in my adult life that have as highly developed a sense of public service as he does. I really believe in him.” Justice Lillehaug was confirmed unanimously by the Senate and served as U.S. Attorney from 1994 to 1998.
Justice Lillehaug was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton on March 26, 2013, to serve as an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, replacing retiring Justice Paul H. Anderson. Justice Lillehaug retired from the Court on July 31, 2020.
