Career path highlights
My career began in the Marine Corps at the age of eighteen. After receiving an honorable discharge, I went on to school—with the intention of starting law school immediately after college. However, life happens. I then went on to work in the financial space after school and in higher education.
My career has come full circle, in that I am now working at DLA Piper, an international corporate law firm, where I am responsible for business development in our Austin office. I absolutely love my job and the people I work with. Earning my J.D., along with the knowledge and skills that I have gained over my career, will help me effectively solve my future client’s business issues.

Tell us about your life outside of law school.
I am married to my best friend, Lauren, and we have one daughter, Avery. When I am not working, I am 100% with them in some way. We often like to spend our time trying new restaurants, going to the park with our dog (Riley), or popping popcorn and watching a movie at home.

Are you working while going to law school?
Yes

Why did you want to go to law school?
I have always loved the law, primarily from the aspect that the law belongs to everyone, and is in every aspect of our lives. Also, as a former start-up founder, I have encountered great attorneys, and not so great attorneys. I would like to make sure that first-time founders of businesses have the best possible chance at being successful.

Why did you choose Mitchell Hamline?
What attracted me to Mitchell Hamline was the possibility of earning my J.D., while not uprooting my family. I was accepted to another school (in Texas) but would have been forced to totally turn my family’s life upside down. This was the best way for me to achieve my goal, and not completely disrupt my family life.

Describe your student experience
Time management has been my number one struggle in law school. I have found that setting a plan is the only way for me to be successful. Also, being flexible in the plan that I set is a learned skill (at least for me). Once you start the program, have a plan, but know that if your plan changes that is okay also. Just do what works best for you.

-
What do you plan to do with your law degree?
I plan to work with businesses, of all sizes, to provide corporate counsel for mergers and acquisitions, venture financing, and general corporate matters.

Please include anything else you think prospective students would be interested to know.
Mitchell Hamline has made law school a possibility for so many students. I am so thankful that I have the chance to become the first person in my family to become an attorney.
Know that at times you are going to wonder if you are going to make it through the program, or even if you are smart enough to finish. You are! Never compare yourself to others, just run your race, and don’t quit. You have a good number of resources to help you on your journey—reach out to them. It’s okay to not know the answer to all of the questions, just keep asking questions.
