Benjamin J. Butler is a Managing Attorney with the Office of the Minnesota Appellate Public Defender. Since joining the office as an assistant state public defender in 2002, he has handled direct appeals to the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Minnesota Supreme Court, and post-conviction matters in the district and appellate courts. In 2007, he successfully argued Danforth v. Minnesota, 128 S.Ct. 1029 (2008), before the United States Supreme Court. He served as a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on the Rules of Criminal Procedure from 2007 – 2013.
Mr. Butler graduated Magna Cum Laude and Order of the Coif from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2001. Prior to joining the Office of the Minnesota Appellate Public Defender, he clerked for the Honorable John J. Sommerville in the Hennepin County District Court.
