Martin Stillman, MD, JD, is a physician, lawyer, and mediator. Martin graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1993 and the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1997. He completed his training in internal medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center where he is currently a practicing internist. Dr. Stillman also mediates conflict among health care professionals and teaches about mediation in health care across the country, helping everyone from front line clinicians to executive leaders learn how to successfully evaluate and address conflict. He currently serves as the mediation and conflict resolution officer for Hennepin Health System (HHS), and has taught advanced health care mediation for the national American Arbitration Association (AAA). He is a member of the national AAA Healthcare Dispute Resolution Advisory Council and is an invited coach for the Mediation Center, a well-recognized leader in mediation training affiliated with the Dispute Resolution Institute at Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
Dr. Stillman is also an assistant director in the HHS Office of Professional Worklife. He is nationally recognized for his work in conflict resolution and its relation to wellness. He has served as an invited speaker for Stanford Medicine’s WellMD educational lecture series, presenting on Promoting Wellness Through Skill Building: Proficient Conflict Resolution, and also an invited panelist for Harvard Medical School’s Center for Primary Care Workforce Wellness in Primary Care Grand Rounds, presenting on addressing provider wellness through the lens of effective conflict resolution and management.
Dr. Stillman has been recognized as an outstanding educator, leader, and advisor. He has received the prestigious University of Minnesota Outstanding Medical School Teaching Award and served for six years as an invited coach and educator for the University of California, San Francisco year-long physician leadership training program. Dr. Stillman also has extensive knowledge of administrative, financial, personnel, and healthcare quality issues associated with medical practice and patient care, having served as senior medical director for Medicine and Medicine Subspecialty Services as well as in leadership roles within the Department of Medicine at HHS.
