Why is Minnesota Removing so Many Children into the Child Protection System?
A Critical Look at the Removal Process in Minnesota
Mitchell Hamline School of Law presents a CLE and continuing education credit conference addressing Minnesota’s removal processes. The presentation will focus on current social science research related to the experience of children during the removal process. We also plan to present a comprehensive overview of Minnesota’s removal data, including a focus on short stayers in the system (children who are removed and then returned within 30 days). Panelists and expert speakers from around the county will discuss best practices for child-centered removal. Further, Minnesota’s removal hearings will be discussed in detail including the law, current practices, and examples of national models for best practice at removal hearings. There will be time at the end of the day for interactive discussion among stakeholders as to how Minnesota could improve its removal processes and hearings.
This event is recommended for judges, attorneys, child protection workers, children’s attorneys, and guardians ad litem. The cost will be $75 and a $50 discounted rate will be offered for public interest attorneys and staff. Lunch will be provided with cost of entry.
CLE credits have been applied for; event code TBA.
