MHSL Extracurricular Diversity Programming Standard

Requirement

Mitchell Hamline School of Law (“MHSL”) students matriculating in fall 2016 or later are required to attend at least six total hours of extracurricular diversity programming (i.e., programming that is not offered as part of any course taken for credit) designed to increase awareness of how to be effective lawyers in a diverse world. 

Students who transfer to Mitchell Hamline must meet the requirements applicable to their anticipated graduating class, except that, if the timing of their transfer does not allow them to complete at least four hours of the required extracurricular programming before their 3L year, they may complete all of the required programming after their 2L year.

Programming that satisfies the MHSL extracurricular diversity programming requirements must be a course, program, or presentation (“event”) focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, or the elimination of bias in the legal profession, the practice of law, or in business. All events must be directly related to the practice of law or the operation of a business and is designed to educate law students on how to identify and eliminate biases against persons because of race, gender, gender identity, economic status, creed, color, religion, national origin, disability, age or sexual orientation in the legal profession, the judicial system, and the practice of law.

Qualified events will be offered at Mitchell Hamline each semester. Outside events may qualify for credit; however, prior approval must be sought before attending. To confirm qualification for such an event, contact Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Sharon Van Leer via email: Sharon.VanLeer@mitchellhamline.edu.  Assume approval if there is not a response within five business days.

Additionally, any event that is submitted for credit toward a student’s extracurricular DEI program requirement, whether provided inside or outside of MHSL, must submit the below ‘Affidavit of Completion’ form. This form includes a section for a thoughtful self-reflection. By completing the form below, you swear or affirm that you attended this (these) event(s) that fulfil the diversity programming requirement. Further, you acknowledge that you understand that dishonesty in reporting is a violation of the Student Conduct Code, that honesty in reporting of such matters is a core value of the profession, and that your honest certification is a reflection of your character and integrity.

Please note the following guidelines updated March 24, 2022:

  • Of the six total hours of programming required before graduation, at least four hours of the programming must be completed in the student’s 1L and/or 2L year.
  • Students will be expected to attend at least three hours of MHSL hosted events.
  • No singular outside event, training, conference, or CLE will be awarded more than three hours to ensure students are gaining a variety of diversity, equity, and inclusive perspectives from a variety of presenters.
  • Outside MHSL events, trainings, conferences, or CLEs that would meet these requirements may include CLEs approved for Elimination of Bias Credits by local Boards of Continuing Legal Education.
  • Reminder that students must seek approval for outside events prior to attending such an event.
  • No credit will be given for work completed before the first day of class of your first semester of law school (incoming 1L Students). Therefore, please do not complete Diversity Programing Affidavits before your first day of class.

2021–22 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Student Workshop Series

Mitchell Hamline students are required to attend at least six total hours of extracurricular diversity programming.  Of the six total hours required before graduation, at least four hours must be completed in the student’s 1L and/or 2L year. The below workshops provide students the opportunity to complete the six required hours.

Identity and Intersectionality: Students with Disabilities (Zoom meeting ID: 919 4761 5323)

Students with disabilities often arrive on campus with many different identities, disability may or may not be part of their primary identity. This presentation will explore the different ways students with disabilities may choose to identify, and the different factors that can influence how, when, and why a student may chose a particular identity. We will also talk about the role of intersectionality.

Mitchell Hamline Designated or Approved Diversity Event

To obtain diversity programming credit for events not listed on the pre-approved list, on or off campus, please confirm qualification with Sharon Van Leer at sharon.vanleer @mitchellhamline.edu.

You must have advance approval for each non-designated diversity event attended. Even if you receive advance approval, you must still complete this Affidavit of Completion.
