Mitchell Hamline and its predecessor schools have a rich tradition of publishing legal journals as well as student newspapers, and alumni news publications. Below are brief descriptions of current and past publications and, where available, links to archives of these publications. Print editions of most of these publications are also available in the Warren E. Burger Library.

Law Reviews and Journals

Mitchell Hamline Law Review (active)

The Mitchell Hamline Law Review was formed by the 2015 merger of the Hamline Law Review and the William Mitchell Law Review. The first volume of the combination was published as volume 42, in recognition of the work and legacy of the law reviews from the two predecessor schools.

Mitchell Hamline Law Review (v. 42-current)

Hamline Law Review

The Hamline Law Review published its initial volume in 1978, three years after the first class graduated from Hamline Law School, under the direction of founding editor-in-chief, Gwen Lerner. Volumes 36-38 of the Hamline Law Review are available online.

Hamline Law Review (v. 36-38)

William Mitchell Law Review

The William Mitchell Law Review, with support from Professor Michael Steenson and Dean Doug Heidenreich, was first published in 1974 under the direction of founding editor-in-chief Marcy Wallace.

Mitchell Hamline Law Journal of Public Policy and Practice (active)

The Mitchell Hamline Law Journal of Public Policy and Practice was formed from the 2015 merger of the Hamline Journal of Public Law and Policy and the William Mitchell Journal of Law and Practice. Prior to the Journal of Public Law and Policy, Hamline published the Hamline Journal of Public Policy (1981-2013) and the Journal of Minnesota Public Law (1980-81). These are both available in print in the Warren E. Burger Library at Mitchell Hamline.

The William Mitchell Commentator was published from 1966-1972. From the preface: “The William Mitchell Commentator presents a selection of the better case comments from those submitted by third year students in fulfillment of their assignment in the course Legal Writing. The views expressed are those of the student writers.”

William Mitchell Environmental Law Journal

The William Mitchell Environmental Law Journal was published annually from 1983-1985 by the students of the William Mitchell Environmental Law Society, advised by J. David Prince. The focus of the journal was “articles of interest on Minnesota and regional environmental issues.”

Student Newspapers

Midwestern Advocate was Midwestern School of Law’s student newspaper from 1973-1975, when it became Hamline University School of Law. It ceased publication, and the name was later taken up by the Hamline Advocate, an alumni publication.

HUSL Student Newspapers

William Mitchell Opinion (1959-1979) / The Opinion (1979-1998, 2000-2009)

The Opinion was the student newspaper of William Mitchell College of Law. The paper won multiple national awards for legal writing, with regular features including school news, editorials, legal opinions, and even sports. It also entertained some controversy, hence the name change in 1979 after it lost funding from the school administration.
