- Details: This session will cover write-on basics including procedures, specific requirements, and deadlines. Volume 47 board members will share their write-on tips. This is also an opportunity to ask general questions about the law review. The session will be recorded and posted on the Volume 47 Write-On Competition webpage.
WHAT IS THE LAW REVIEW?
The Mitchell Hamline Law Review is composed of articles written by students, professors, and practitioners discussing relevant legal topics. This publication is entirely student managed. The journal is published and distributed to practitioners and is available on Westlaw.
HOW DO I JOIN?
Students join the law review by entering the Write-On Competition. Any student who has completed one year of studies and will not graduate before May 2021 is eligible to apply. You can sign up by filling out the registration form online at the Law Review page on the school’s website. Registration closes May 7, 2020 at 11:59p.m.
The write-on competition takes place after finals, and over the course of three weeks: from May 17 – June 7, 2020. Applicants will complete a 40-question Bluebook quiz and author a short case note (a mini-analysis of a recent Minnesota Supreme Court decision). The Bluebook quiz will be distributed at 9:00 a.m. on May 17 and will be due at 7:00 p.m. on May 22. The following day, May 23 at 9:00 a.m., case note topics will be distributed; case notes are due on June 7 at 7:00 p.m. All grading will be anonymous, and successful applicants will be notified mid-July.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A LAW REVIEW ASSOCIATE?
Associates conduct authority checks, cite checks, and make light edits on assigned articles. Additionally, all Associates must write an article during their time on law review, which satisfies the “long paper” requirement for graduation. Associates may also have their paper published!
For their services, Associates earn 3 pass/fail academic credits for the school year. These credits can be applied in any combination to Fall or Spring semesters.
WHY JOIN LAW REVIEW?
Associates become extremely proficient at writing, editing, and citing. Associates are also surrounded by hard-working and motivated people who they might not meet otherwise. Lastly, law review makes a lasting impression on a resume.
