The Native American Law and Sovereignty (NALS) Certificate is now available for those who wish to apply. If you are a graduating student this fall 2021, please contact Professor EagleWoman and/or Lani Petrulo, NALS Program Administrator as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. If you are graduating in the spring of 2022, you will have second priority to apply for the Certificate. We have application forms that are necessary to designate candidates for the Certificate.
The Native American Law and Sovereignty Certificate is comprised of 18 credits as detailed below. Here are the four requirements: Foundational courses (9 credits); NALS Experiential Requirement (3 credit minimum); Writing Requirement must meet long paper requirement set out in the Advanced Research and Writing (ARW) requirement; and NALS Electives and Concentration (6 credit minimum).
I. Foundation required courses: 1) 4313 Native American Law (3 credits) – prerequisite for all other courses; 2) 4314 Advanced Topics in Native American Law (3 credits); and 3) 3010 Introduction to Tribal Law (3 credits) may satisfy ARW long paper writing requirement
II. NALS Experiential Requirement may be for 3 credits: Native Law Clinic: Tribal Code Drafting or an Externship
III. Writing Requirement: Legal research paper approved by Director on Native American law topic and meeting the ARW standards in the Intro to Tribal Law course, a directed study under faculty supervision or law/journal paper under faculty supervision
IV. NALS Electives and Concentration: Meet with Director to discuss area of concentration within the Certificate and successfully complete 6 credits in the concentration.
