Transgender Identity: Rights and Challenges Locally and Globally, #4106, will be offered on Mondays, 10: 00 am – noon, in a synchronous remote format, for 2 elective credits. Mitchell Hamline is unique among U.S. law schools in offering a course exclusively on issues of transgender rights.
It will be team-taught by Judge Tara Kalar and Dr. Ellen Kennedy, Executive Director, World Without Genocide.
In 1975, Minneapolis became the first city in the United States to pass legislation for trans-inclusive civil rights protection. In the nearly half-century since that landmark legislation, transgender rights have moved forward but have also faced a significant backlash both locally and globally.
This course examines these competing trajectories and the global, national, state, and municipal legislation and policies that affect a transgender person’s life: education, health care, housing, criminal justice, employment, sport, arts, marriage and family, the legal system, and personal safety.
