Please join the ACLU and NALSA for a panel on the “Treaty Rights, Water Protectors, and Litigation involving Line 3.” The event will be worth (1) DEI credit. Professor Angelique EagleWoman (Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate) will provide the historical legal framework on treaty rights on ceded lands, litigation to Stop Line 3 involving the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, and the Tribal Court lawsuit on behalf of Manoomin (Wild Rice), the White Earth Nation and tribal individuals against the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. GeWaden Dunkley (Bois Forte Ojibwe) will discuss the significance of the relationship between the ceded lands to Ojibwe peoples and the call to advocacy to protect land and waters. Ben Swankier (Leech Lake Band) will provide commentary on exercising treaty rights including harvesting wild rice as a generational tradition.
