Applications for Summer and Fall 2024 Law and Business Externship – due Friday, April 5
The Law and Business Externship provides students with the opportunity to work in a company or law firm setting where they observe, participate in, and reflect upon the work of a business lawyer or business professional. Past placements have included organizations like Regis Corporation, Medica Corporation, US Bank, Thomson Reuters, Hamline University General Counsel’s Office, city attorney offices, mid-size and small law firms and more.
- Time Commitment: The Law and Business Externship is offered for 4 academic credits every spring, summer, and fall semester. This translates to approximately 13-15 hours of work per week at the placement site throughout a 13-week semester (approximately 20 hours per week in the summer semester). Specific work schedules are flexible and are established based on the needs and availability of both the placement and the student.
- Eligibility: Eligible students must be 2Ls, 3Ls, or 4Ls who have taken Professional Responsibility and Business Organizations. (Professional Responsibility and Business Organizations may be taken as co-requisites or may be waived with approval from the Law and Business Externship course faculty and the placement.)
- Placements: Course faculty will assist students in finding field placements. Students are also encouraged to seek placements of interest to them. Fieldwork supervision must be provided by an attorney.
- Seminar Component: Class sessions cover topics relating to the work of a business lawyer or business professional. Seminar sessions are held in either HyFlex or remote synchronous formats so all students can participate.
- In-Person/Blended Remote: The Law and Business Externship is open to students in the in-residence and blended programs. Placements may be either in-person or remote or hybrid depending upon the needs and availability of the student and the placement.
To apply for either the Summer 2024 or Fall 2024 Law and Business Externship, please complete the online application and email it to Professor Fuith (leanne.fuith@mitchellhamline.edu) by Friday, April 5. Your completed application must include a current resume and unofficial Mitchell Hamline transcript. Preference will be given to students who have met all the eligibility requirements and based on their proximity to graduation.
Applications will be accepted after April 5, but placements will be assigned on a first come first serve basis so it is best to submit your application soon.
Summer placements will be finalized by mid-May and students will be notified of their placement by then. Registration for the Law and Business Externship will be completed after the student’s placement has been confirmed. Students should plan to begin work at their externship placement during the week of June 1, 2024.
