Transgender Identity: Rights and Challenges Locally and Globally, #4106, will be offered this fall on Thursdays, 6:00-7:55pm CT, in a synchronous remote format, for 2 elective credits.
The course will be taught by Judge Tara Kalar and Dr. Ellen Kennedy, Executive Director of World Without Genocide.
Mitchell Hamline is among the very few U.S. law schools offering a course exclusively on transgender rights.
In 1975, Minneapolis became the first city in the US to pass legislation for trans-inclusive civil rights protection. In the nearly half-century since that legislation, transgender rights have moved forward but now face a significant backlash locally and globally.
This course examines these competing trajectories and the legislation and policies affecting a transgender person’s life: education, health care, housing, criminal justice, employment, sport, arts, marriage and family, the legal system, and safety.
