Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota (LSNM) is a non-profit law firm that represents Minnesotans who can’t afford an attorney in their civil legal cases. They are hiring a paid summer law clerk who will have a hands-on experience of what it is like to work in legal aid. Applications are available now on 12twenty and are due by the end of the day Sunday, April 6th. The clerk will be based out of LSNM’s Moorhead office and receive a stipend of $6900 for the 10 week clerkship.
Clerks will have the chance to shadow seasoned staff attorneys, providing a unique perspective on the day-to-day challenges and rewards of public interest law. This includes observing court proceedings, participating in case strategy discussions, and engaging directly with clients.
Clerks will also conduct client intake interviews, allowing them to sharpen their communication skills and develop a deeper understanding of the legal needs faced by low-income communities. Beyond shadowing and client interviews, clerks will gain real-world experience by assisting attorneys in drafting legal documents, preparing cases for hearings, and researching complex legal issues. Clerks may work on special projects, including those related to the Reach Justice Minnesota Project, focusing on innovative solutions to legal problems affecting low-income Minnesotans. With a flexible structure that allows for exploration of a clerk’s particular areas of interest, this clerkship ensures meaningful public law practice in areas such as housing, family law, public benefits, and consumer law. This hands-on approach guarantees that no two days are the same, making the clerkship both challenging and fulfilling.
Clerks will work in person out of the Moorhead office. For information about potential summer housing options, see here: https://www.ndsu.edu/residence_life/summer_housing/guest_housing/
