Public Affairs Counsel, Humphrey Consulting Services
Hubert H. “Skip” Humphrey III currently provides public affairs counsel doing business as Humphrey Consulting Services. He also volunteers with AARP-MN as a member of the Executive Council and serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council at the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
Previously he has served as Assistant Director and Senior Liaison Officer for the Office of Financial Protection for Older Americans at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a new consumer protection agency which came into existence in 2011. That office is tasked with improving the financial decision-making of seniors and preventing unfair, deceptive, and abusive practices targeted at seniors.
Prior to his public service at the CFPB, Humphrey held other public and private positions related to public affairs and public service. He was elected to the Minnesota state senate in 1972 and then elected attorney general in 1982, serving four consecutive terms until 1999. During his tenure at the Attorney General’s office, Humphrey directed the office taking numerous consumer protection and enforcement actions to prevent fraud and deceptive practices. These actions included land-mark litigation and resolution of actions against tobacco companies resulting in disclosure of fraud and deceptive practices by that industry and recovery of funds from such illegal activity.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, Humphrey returned to the private sector after leaving public office, working as senior vice president at Tunheim Partners and teaching courses at the University’s School of Public Health. He is former state president and national board member of AARP.
Humphrey lives in Golden Valley MN with his wife Lee.
