Canvas finals cannot be scheduled, closed book, or proctored by Student Services.Take-home exams must not exceed 4 hours in length, unless they are designed to be completed over one or more days (24 or more hours). Student Services does not typically provide support for take-home exams. If you need support building your exam in Canvas, please contact your instruction designer or email id@mitchellhamline.edu.

Take-home exams with a set time limit are capped at a 4-hour maximum. If faculty members want students to spend more than 4 hours actively reading the exam and outlining, writing, editing and/or revising their exam answers, they may opt for a 24-, 48-, or 72-hour time period, or an unlimited window during the exam period, during which students may take the exam. Under this policy, the duration of all take-home exams are to be 4 hours or less, OR at least 24 hours.

For take-home exams that allow students at least 24 hours to outline, write, edit and/or revise their exam answers, the faculty member giving the exam will be required to notify Student Services of the total number of hours they intend the slowest student to spend actively reading the exam and outlining, writing, editing and/or revising their exam answers. (E.g., the faculty member would notify Student Services that students have a total of 24 hours after accessing the exam to submit their exam answers, 6-8 hours of which they should spend actively reading the exam and outlining, writing, editing and/or revising their exam answers.) This will allow for a better determination of what, if any, disability accommodations may be reasonable for students who receive extra time on exams.
