A wide variety of off-campus opportunities
Earn credit outside of the law school by working with practicing attorneys in the community. Mitchell Hamline offers students a variety of externships that provide valuable hands-on learning experiences and residency opportunities for students in their third or fourth years to secure long-term, on-site placements working under the supervision of practicing attorneys.
Externships
Students work across a range of practice areas and legal settings including prosecutors and public defenders; state, federal, and tribal judges; federal and state agencies; and a wide variety of small, medium, and large private law firms and businesses. Students in externships are typically supervised by attorneys and judges working as adjunct professors in our externship program.
Residencies
Students in their last three semesters at MHSL may do a residency by externing full-time at an on-site placement, while working under the supervision of practicing attorneys and a FT MHSL faculty member. Students must have completed all their required courses and have a minimum of a 2.8 GPA to participate. It’s a key part of our bridge-to-practice programming, offering experienced students a close-up look at the world of legal work.
