Mitchell Hamline School of Law offers several educational programs that give you opportunities to learn about the law well before pursuing a J.D. in law school. There are opportunities to get a head start on law school, prepare yourself to succeed in law school, or even earn free college credits toward your bachelor’s degree at partner schools.
CLEO
Council on Legal Education Opportunity
CLEO national non-profit organization that was founded in 1968 to expand opportunities for minority and low-income students to attend law school. Since its inception, more than 25,000 students have participated in CLEO’s programs and joined the legal profession.
Gateway
Gateway to Legal Education Program
An introduction to law school and the practice of law teaching undergraduates from historically underrepresented communities through online law courses and a summer program.
PLSI
Pre-Law Summer Institute
This summer program prepares American Indian and Alaskan Native individuals for their first year of law school. Participants become part of a cohort of Native American law students from around the country that supports them through law school and after graduation.
SPIL
Summer Partnership in Law
This seven-week summer program features two courses taught by Mitchell Hamline faculty: American Legal Systems and Legal Reasoning and Writing. It is a pre-law program for students who have completed their sophomore year at various Minnesota State colleges and universities.

Does law school ignite your interest?
As early as high school, you can begin to explore legal education and prepare for your journey to law school. Discover the many alternatives through Minnesota College Knowledge month, campus tours, mock trials and debate competitions, and pre-law summer programs.
Mitchell Hamline is dedicated to supporting, educating, and learning from the community. Therefore, we work to build connections with high schools and law-related organizations within the Twin Cities to introduce law school and bring early awareness to the young people—allowing them to learn directly from those in the legal field.
