HOME Line runs a free tenant hotline advising roughly 15,000 renters each year. COVID-19 has changed an unprecedented number of things in our lives, and college/university students who rent throughout the state have been contacting us in unprecedented numbers with a lot of questions about their rights in this new era.
Since April, HOME Line has been conducting weekly free webinars updating the landlord/tenant community on the rapidly changing legal landscape relating to COVID-19 specific issues.
Many students signed their leases that are starting this August/September before the pandemic took hold in March. These students have been asking about the validity of these contracts if they aren’t attending school in person.
Other questions we are concerned about include things like what happens if there’s a COVID-19 outbreak in a large building. Where do these sick students go? Where do the healthy students end up?
This is our first webinar focused on a specific segment of the rental world—student renters. We’ll be trying to answer as many questions as possible submitted either in advance or during the 90-minute session. This webinar is free and open to all, but is designed for university/college students, school administrators/faculty and university/college area landlords.
To help with answering these questions, we’ll be joined by William Dane, the Senior Staff Attorney with the University of MN’s Student Legal Services. Joining Mr. Dane will be Mike Vraa, HOME Line’s Managing Attorney and Eric Hauge, HOME Line’s Executive Director.
