The University of Minnesota Law School student group, TORT (Theatre of the Relatively Talentless), is inviting you to their 2022 performance of Gunner’s New Groove. TONIGHT, Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26 at 7:30 PM (CT) in the St. Paul Student Center.
Each year, their organization performs a musical and thought MH students might appreciate hearing about it and having the opportunity to attend. The musical is written by law students, performed by law students, and created by law student production and executive teams. Although UMN law students make up a majority of our audience members, it occurred to me that Mitchell students might also like the show. The difficulties of law school are equally suffered by all law students, yes?
The aesthetic of the musical is very “afterschool special.” We take a well-known story, change the story to a law school topic, and then incorporate well-known songs, changing the lyrics to also be about law school. We also include a “law school dictionary” in the program so even those who aren’t in law school can get the jokes. That way, we can accommodate both our legal and non-legal audience members. This year’s show is Gunner’s New Groove, which follows the enlightenment journey of anti-hero Kuzco, an entitled, self-involved 3L, after he loses his status as the “emperor” of Mondale.
The show is this weekend on Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 pm in the St. Paul Student Center. If you are interested, here is a link to the EventBrite page. We will also be selling tickets at the door via cash or Venmo directly before the show. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out at tort@umn.edu.
Hope to see you there!
