(St. Paul, MN; December 13, 2022) On December 7, 2022, World Without Genocide, a human rights non-profit at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in Saint Paul, MN, was one of nine human rights organizations, known as NGOs (non-governmental organizations), awarded Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC. ECOSOC is one of the six main organs of the UN.
Special Consultative Status gives NGOs access to ECOSOC and to its many subsidiary bodies, to the human rights mechanisms of the United Nations, to ad hoc processes on small arms, and to attendance at special events organized by the President of the General Assembly.
NGOs in consultative status can typically be accredited to attend relevant UN global conferences and can also host events at the UN headquarters in New York.
Other organizations with this status include Amnesty International; the International League for Human Rights; the International Bar Association; and the Special Olympics.
The UN has granted Consultative Status since its beginning in 1946; today, several thousand NGOs around the world represent civil society at the UN.
World Without Genocide promotes education and action to protect innocent people, prevent genocide, prosecute perpetrators, and remember those affected by genocide.
World Without Genocide is also formally associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications.
