Rising second, third, and fourth-year students are invited to apply to serve as LARC Writing Assistants (LWAs) in both the LARC I and II residential-program courses and in Mitchell Hamline’s Research & Writing Center for the 2024-2025 academic year. There are both for-credit and compensation options.
All LWAs will work with students one-on-one to help students improve their analytical, research, and writing skills and become self-regulated learners. However, in this role, LWAs will not serve as editors nor will they grade students’ work.
For credit: For-credit LWAs will earn three credits in the fall and two credits in the spring. During the fall semester, LWAs will attend the LWA course (set based on the availability of all for-credit LWAs and the LWA professor) and will be assigned to attend a residential LARC I class. Students will also draft and get feedback on writing assignments and will help with problem development. During the spring semester, LWAs will, again, attend the LWA course, help plan and organize the Summit Cup Motion Argument Competition, organize and present classes or supplemental programs, and continue to work one-on-one with students. For-credit LWAs must be available to attend at least one LARC I class during the fall semester (T/Th 8-9:30, T/Th 3:30-5, or M/W 6-7:30).
For compensation: For-compensation LWAs should expect to hold office hours for approximately four to five hours per week. In addition to working one-on-one with students, for-compensation LWAs may also be asked to help develop materials and workshops and assist faculty with moot court competitions. The Writing Center is seeking at least one LWA who can help students working on their long papers.
All LWAs will receive training on effective and inclusive teaching and learning strategies.
Qualifications:
- For credit: Achieve a B or higher in LARC I and LARC II (for rising 2Ls, you are eligible to apply if you achieved a B or higher in LARC I and you think you are likely to achieve a B or higher in LARC II based on your LARC II grades to date).
- For compensation: Strong analytical, research, and writing skills and an understanding of the research and writing process.
- Demonstrate leadership and empathy skills.
- Interest in mentorship and teaching (experience is an added plus).
- Desire to continue to grow as a legal thinker, writer, and mentor.
- For-compensation: work-study eligibility preferred.
