Genocide Prevention: A 21st-Century Challenge, #4601, will be offered this spring on Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:00-9:35 am CT, in a synchronous remote format, for 3 elective credits.
The course will be taught by Dr. Ellen Kennedy, Executive Director of World Without Genocide.
The course focuses on genocides in the past, from the Holocaust to Cambodia, Rwanda, former Yugoslavia, and Darfur, and conflicts today in Myanmar, China, Ukraine, Gaza, and elsewhere; legal structures that support genocide; international laws and policies of prevention and peacekeeping; post-genocide efforts to prosecute perpetrators and create justice through ad hoc and permanent international tribunals; and restorative programs.
The class format includes lectures, discussions, case studies and debates; and guest speakers, including lawyers involved in restorative and retributive justice; humanitarian aid providers; experts on post-genocide victim identification; and survivors of conflicts.
